Skype

I have just made my first video call on my Mac! It was very easy. I used Skype 2.0 for Mac
www.skype.com/download/skype/macosx/
What is good about it for Mac users is that it works well with PC users, and there is no extra cost as you are already using your internet connection (broadband needed.)
There is an article in this month’s (November) MacFormat magazine, a fuller tutorial will be in December’s issue.

This will have great potential as more and more computers and laptops have cameras built in avoiding the need to go to a local video access point.

Skype is just fab, isn’t it? The more people use Broadband the more they realise just how connected the world has become. When I first used Skype just for VOIP calls, I was so impressed with the audio quality being so much better than that of a traditional landline – the bass resonance is far clearer for example.

When Skype brought out the video element for PC a while ago, it was such a shame that the mac version did not appear at the same time – now it is out, then more and more people can enjoy video calling over a broadband connection! it makes such a difference being able to see the person you are speaking with, doesn’t it?

With MacBooks coming with an integrated iSight camera, it seems clear to me that this is definitely an area worth watching in the future. Skype does work within the schools network Alastair – have you tried this with another school? It would be great to get the kids communicating with others!

    Hey chaps,
I’ve had you both on my Skype pending authorisation window for months, and issued several requesting emails and you haven’t responded and that was just to see if we could get it to go, on voice alone, in schools. Did you not get the mails, or perhaps Skype wasn’t working . I have the camera poised, now though. Come on down the price is right! Look forward to hearing from you. This would be great and what Morag and myself set out to do two years ago. Marlyn
    Watch out for another request.

Discovered this weekend after our chat Alastair, that to get you as a contact, you have to be online at the time because Skype doesn’t send an email but an Instant message it seems, so we have to set up a time initially.
